Abstract: | The 1981-82 Annual Report of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NSW) highlights significant achievements in conservation and park management despite funding and staffing constraints. Key accomplishments include the establishment of three new national parks and five historic sites, bringing the total reserved area to approximately 4% of New South Wales—a 60% increase since the Wran government took office. The Service recorded over 14 million visitors to its managed areas, demonstrating strong public engagement. Notable developments include the launch of a new associate diploma course in park management at Riverina College of Advanced Education and the comprehensive review of the Kosciusko National Park management plan, which set new standards for public participation in park planning. The report also celebrates the successful Lord Howe Island Woodhen conservation project, which gained international recognition. Throughout the year, the Service maintained its commitment to wildlife conservation, Aboriginal cultural heritage preservation, and public recreation management through careful resource allocation and strong community partnerships. |
