Abstract: The 1989-90 financial year marked a period of significant transformation for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), characterized by major management restructuring and the resolution of long-standing administrative challenges. Key reforms implemented during this period included the establishment of improved management information systems, the appointment of a qualified financial controller, enhancement of internal audit functions, and the development of more robust financial management procedures. The Service addressed critical staffing issues, including the regrading of regional and district office clerical positions, while continuing negotiations for improved remuneration of professional and field staff within national wage case guidelines. Despite these administrative challenges, the Service maintained its core programs in land management, natural and cultural conservation, research, and planning. The period also saw the initiation of cost recovery measures for recreational activities in State Recreation Areas and the ongoing expansion of the Service's estate.
