Abstract: The map referred to in these notes was produced mainly from reconnaissance mapping as part of a programme to provide regional geological maps of the State. The field programme was initiated during 1963 and completed in 1969. Over this period an average staff of four geologists produced fifty sheets (totalling about 775 000 km^ at 1:250,000 scale and another two sheets (about 186 000 km^) at 1:500,000. Completion of the programme within the period would not have been possible without the considerable aid received from the various universities, mining and mineral exploration groups, and government instrumentalities. Their assistance is gratefully acknowledged. Mapping detail is indicated by the reliability diagram on the map, while principal mapping sources are indicated and acknowledged in the notes. Work is at present (1973) proceeding on the compilation of the Nymagee 1:250,000 Metallogenic Map, with accompanying mine data sheets and tectonic and genetic discussion. Because this detailed work is in preparation, a section on the economic geology has not been included in these explanatory notes
