Abstract: | Recent palynological studies indicate that the Oaklands Basin sequence consists of sediments of possible Carboniferous, and certainly early Permian, late Permian, and mid Triassic age, overlain by Eocene and Oligocene sediments of the Murray Basin. he Oaklands sedimentary basin, described by Bembrick (1975) is a north-northwesterly-south-southeasterly trending Permo - Triassic infrabasin beneath the eastern Murray Basin (see figure 1). Geological interest in this concealed basin began with the discovery of coal at shallow depth in a water bore in 1916, and exploration in the area for petroleum, water, and sedimentary uranium has provided further valuable information. A summary of the intermittent coal exploration until 1950 was provided by Sturmfels (1950). |
