The 1982-83 fiscal year marked significant achievements and challenges for nature conservation in New South Wales. Notable accomplishments included the Government's landmark decision on rainforest protection and the dedication of two critical wetland nature reserves: Towra Point and Kooragang Island, both nominated for inclusion in the Treaty on Wetlands of International Significance. However, the Service faced considerable challenges, including one of the most severe droughts on record, which significantly impacted kangaroo populations in western New South Wales. In response, the Service continued its major research project at Kinchega National Park to better understand kangaroo biology and population dynamics. Despite operating under financial and staffing constraints, the Service benefited from the Government's Wage Pause Programme, which provided additional resources for various conservation projects. The Service recorded approximately 15 million park visitors and allocated its $1.9 million capital works budget primarily between visitor facilities (30%) and management facilities (30%). Notable organizational developments included the initiation of a new corporate plan and a review of regional administrative arrangements. The Service continued to receive valuable support from the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation, State Recreation Area Trusts, and various advisory bodies, demonstrating the crucial role of community participation in conservation efforts.en
