dc.description.abstract | This comprehensive guide examines the rainforests of New South Wales, Australia, documenting their classification, distribution, structure, origins, and conservation status. The work identifies four major rainforest subformations: subtropical, dry, warm temperate, and cool temperate, comprising 13 floristic alliances and 57 suballiances. The study details the structural and physiognomic features characteristic of each subformation, including canopy structure, species composition, and specialized life forms. Through analysis of historical records and current distribution patterns, the research traces the Gondwanan origins of these rainforests and their subsequent evolution. The guide presents detailed information on natural regeneration processes, including seed dispersal mechanisms, germination requirements, and successional patterns. Conservation challenges are addressed, with particular focus on the impacts of fire, logging, and habitat fragmentation. The work identifies that while 93% of remaining rainforest is on public land with 48% in reserves, many sub-alliances remain inadequately protected. The study provides essential baseline data for rainforest management and conservation, including comprehensive species lists and distribution records for 110 rare or threatened species. | en |
dc.description.tableofcontents | Volume 1 is a general compendium of Australian rainforest knowledge, definition, structure and physiognomy, classification, distribution, origin, natural, artificial and assisted regeneration principles and methods, conservation and suggested further reading. Volume 2 covers the 57 recognised plant alliances or sub-alliances. Structure, physiognomy, location and interrelationships with other sub-alliances are discussed. | en |
