Analysis of water samples collected in creeks draining the Woodsreef asbestos mine showed relatively high levels of alkalinity and magnesium; however, low levels of nickel and chromium indicated no apparent problem with leaching of metals from the mine area. Samples of active stream sediment in creeks draining the mine were analysed, the results being used to indicate the movement of sediment derived from the mine area. High nickel and chromium levels, consistent with analysis of waste material, indicate small quantities of fine tailings are being washed down the creek. It is concluded that the mining operation should have no affect, in terms of siltation, or chemical water quality of receiving waters for domestic or agricultural use, on the proposed Split Rock Dam. Concern is expressed, however, over the practice of placing huge quantities of potentially unstable tailings over the headwaters of a number of creeks.-
