Abstract: Procedures and results are presented from an investigation of techniques for determining the in situ gas content and composition of coal seams. This work was conducted both in conjunction with a Department of Mineral Resources coal exploration drilling program and underground at Westcl iff Colliery. Compatibility has been demonstrated between the aims of exploration for geological purposes and for gas assessment. The feasibility of a more cost effective means of gas content determination in underground conditions has been demonstrated. Recommendations are given for further work.
