The geology of New South Wales is complex and many of the problems associated with the stratigraphy are only now being recognized. It will be many years before any definite answers can be provided for the numerous questions which arise from geological investigations in the State. Contributions to the knowledge of the geology of N.S.W. have been made by the various universities, and by private and governmental organizations. The authors have endeavoured to summarize this knowledge in the following text. Geologically the State has been subdivided on a time basis following the ages shown in Figure 1. The distribution of rocks of these ages is shown on the accompanying map of New South Wales at a scale of 1: 3,000,000 (i.e., approximately one inch to 48 miles). The tectonic history of the State indicates that there has been a general easterly growth of the continental mass.-
