Abstract: On 22nd December, 1963 the No. 1 Tunnel of Bellbird Colliery was sealed because ofthe occurrence ofa serious undergroundfire. During the subsequent reclamation of the Colliery using self-contained breathing apparatus the fire was re-activated. A mild blast occurred during re-sealing operations. The second attempt at the recovery of the tunnel was successful and the Colliery resumed production on 14th May, 1964
