Abstract: With the collaboration of a number of coal-producing and coal-using organisations, the Fuel Research Committee has measured the average error of a number of representative New South Wales coals. The results show a close similarity to those quoted by the British Standards Institu tion for United Kingdom coals and used as a basis for the Institution’s coal-sampling specifications. These specifications may therefore be used with confidence for the sampling of New South Wales coals. While some of the coals tested have an average error in remarkably cloae agreement with the “normal,” it is noteworthy that certain New South Wales coals resemble certain United Kingdom coals in giving very low values for the average error. Further investigation is necessary to define the conditions favouring this greater uniformity.
