Department of Environment and Conservation NSW Annual Report 2003-04

Abstract

This report documents the inaugural year of operations for the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) New South Wales following its formation in September 2003 through the merger of the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Environment Protection Authority, Resource NSW and Botanic Gardens Trust. The report details DEC's establishment and integration of the former agencies while maintaining delivery of core environmental protection and conservation services. Key achievements included: implementing pollution reduction programs resulting in improved air and water quality; expanding the protected area system by nearly 49,000 hectares; developing the first Extended Producer Responsibility Priority Statement for waste management; conducting comprehensive State of the Parks reporting; and strengthening Aboriginal cultural heritage protection.
