Abstract: Four limestone deposits situated from two to three miles north west of the village of Murringo were examined to assess their potential as marble quarry sites. The deposits, all located within the parish of Murringo, county Monteagle, are of Upper Silurian origin and are interbedded with greywacke, tuff, porphyry and rhyolite. All the deposits suffer from defects, such as lack of obvious size, colour variation, close jointing, and impurities along the bedding planes.
Deposits of limestone or marble not held under mining titles were investigated- Location of stone suitable for the building trade i.e. capable of producing sawn slabs, was the purpose of the inspections. All deposits were previously recorded
This quarry, within PML 2, parish Tomalla, county Hawes has been opened to provide building stone. Access is difficult and the deposit small and of unknown structure. Quality is generally good, and colour varies from white to pale grey but jointing is irregular.
