The Fuel Section deals with the chemistry of the occurrence, prospecting, winning, evaluation, utilisation and manufacturing processes involved with all types of gaseous, liquid and solid fuels, occurring naturally in N.S.W. and the various products, fuel and non-fuel (e.g. ash), derived from those naturally occurring fuels. Although the bulk of the work is practical, advice and information on fuel matters is given. There is also Departmental representation on relevant committees of the Standards Association of Australia. Samples of coal and brown coal are received from the Geological Survey Branch in connection with the physical and chemical survey of New South Wales coal resources, particularly by scout boring. Thus in 191 samples from eleven bores in the Awaba Dora Creek area were analysed in connection with the survey of available coal for the Vales Point Power Station. Samples of brown coals from bores in the Griffith area to ascertain the quality and extent of the deposit were also received and analysed and compared with Victorian brown coals. The geological logs of the cores were supplied by the Geological Survey Branch. As will be seen the brown coals were relatively high in ash, of uneven quality, and had much overburden. Results of samples of coal seams encountered in the Eraring No. 1 bore the Wyee State Mine, Mount Hawk, Northern Extended Colliery, Grose River, Eneabba No. 1 well an the Terrigal oil bore are included in this report.-
