The Department of Planning was established on 29 August 2005 when the former Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources was abolished and its former branches transferred to other agencies. All branches other than the following were transferred to the Department of Planning: Corporate Services Branch, Finance Branch, staff in the Government and Executive Coordination Unit required in connection with the Department of Natural Resources, staff in the Media and Communications Branch required in connection with the Department of Natural Resources, staff who are principally involved in the administration of legislation administered by the Minister for Natural Resources, staff in the Office of Major Projects principally involved in major infrastructure and project coordination, staff in the Metropolitan Water Directorate principally involved in the administration of the Metropolitan Water Strategy (policy and implementation), staff in the Transport Network Unit of the Transport Information Branch principally involved in providing transport network advice, and staff principally involved in the administration of the Electricity Demand Management Project. © State of New South Wales through Museums of History NSW
