The Waste Recycling and Processing Service of NSW South Wales, a Government trading Enterprise operating as the Waste Service NSW, was established on 1 March 1992. The service replaced the Waste Management Authority and continued to operate under the Waste Disposal Act, 1970 as amended. In June 1994 the Minister for the Environment released a policy entitled ‘No time to waste’ under which the Waste Service of New South Wales would become a State-Owned Corporation and advised that it would receive a new charter to operate throughout the State of New South Wales. The impacts of this change included that the Service would continue to be self-funding and publicly-owned but would be removed from the direct daily control of the Government. Regional Waste Authorities were established to provide services locally but the Waste Service continued to offer the full range of services to local government. The responsibilities of the Waste Service were substantially altered by the Waste Minimisation and Management Act, 1995 (Act No 102, 1995) that re-organised the waste management industry in New South Wales. The original Act was retrospectively re-named the Waste Recycling and Processing Service Act, 1970 - 1995. The new Act came into force from 19 January 1996. The Waste Service as established in 1992 was effectively abolished because of the degree of functional change and the altered relationships within the waste industry. The responsibilities of the Waste Service of New South Wales were substantially altered by the Waste Minimisation and Management Act, 1995 (Act No 102, 1995) that re-organised the waste management industry in New South Wales. he Waste Recycling and Processing Corporation was established as a State Owned Corporation by the Waste Recycling and Processing Corporation Act, 2001, (Act No. 59, 2001) and the Waste Recycling and Processing Service was dissolved. © State of New South Wales through Museums of History NSW
